Go-to Questions When You’re at a Loss for Words

Have you ever been in a meeting and debated whether or not to speak up? Or at a work event and you can’t figure out how to enter a conversation? Instead of hiding behind silence or agreeable nods, which can leave a poor impression of your strength and value, you can always ask a question. When I’m feeling intimidated or at a loss for words, I’ve found that asking the right question can initiate a rich dialogue and can be just as effective as expressing an opinion. You’ll increase your presence in the room and leave the mark of strong leadership.

It’s amazing what we can accomplish and learn when we ask better questions of others. They can forge stronger connections and lead to a culture of belonging. When you ask questions you genuinely are curious about and are actively present for the other person, it makes them feel heard. You gain insight into others’ expertise, and help amplify new voices.

When you’re really stuck, here are some great go-to questions that can be adapted for most work situations.

  • How does this align with our bigger goals?

  • Is there a third way? What are we missing right now?

  • What outcome would we feel good about?

  • What does success look like?
